Acknowledging the difficulties of producing disease free root systems in field nurseries, the Chislett’s decided to use the container growing system in conjunction with procedures to prevent infection. To meet a strong demand for this type of tree they established their existing nursery in 1997. Today with the use of high tech rolling benches imported from the Netherlands, and a sterilised nutrient solution, the nursery produces high quality disease free trees. Due to strong grower demand, the main variety propagated is now the M7, their new early navel variety. Growers are welcome, however, to order almost any variety of citrus they wish to grow.
The nursery is one of only three citrus nurseries in Australia to qualify for the Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme of Australia (NIASA). This mandates the use of quarantine and hygiene protocols to exclude diseases and viruses from the trees. The spin-off for growers is a more rapid orchard establishment and higher profits.
