Nursery

Chislett Nurseries

Container grown trees can be planted with fewer disturbances to feeder roots reducing transplant shock, and may be successfully planted virtually any time of the year.
Accredited to ISO 9002:1994 the Nursery also carries N.I.A.S.A. accreditation. This dual accreditation reassures growers that the trees shipped have been raised from approved materials, propagated under optimal conditions under the strictest hygiene measures, all independently assessed by regular audit. With the high cost of development and the trend towards high density plantings, which provide a faster economic return, the last thing a grower wants is to plant nursery trees with unhealthy root systems. Rolling benches imported from the Netherlands and installed in a significant up-grade of facilities have increased the capacity of the polyhouses by 75%. We are the first nursery in Australia to use this innovative system for commercial citrus propagation. A further extension using a netted area constructed to NIASA guidelines will increase total capacity to 130,000 trees.
A new fertigation system was also installed with this project, incorporating chlorine dioxide treatment of Murray River and recycled water, to ensure the elimination of root pathogens which can retard tree development when planted out by growers.
Trees are hardened off prior to despatch in the shade house to acclimatise them to conditions in the growers’ orchard.
The nursery was established twenty years ago primarily to propagate the Chislett Summer Navel which was discovered by Greg and Susan.
A full range of varieties and rootstocks are propagated in the Nursery. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
Only approved virus tested propagating materials are used.
A high bud union is provided on all of our trees keeping the union well above ground level to assist in the prevention of phytophthora infection of the scion.
Strict hygiene measures are possible as the trees have no contact at all with the soil prior to planting by the grower preventing potential contamination by soil borne pathogens. All staff and visitors are required to pressure wash shoes and pass through a foot bath at entry. Similarly, all vehicles making deliveries such as potting mix, are required to drive through a sterilising wheel bath.
Colour coding and tagging of each individual tree ensure growers receive the correct variety. The tags may remain on the trees when planting for identification purposes. The colour coding assists in eliminating the possibility of mixing varieties when several different patches are being developed concurrently.
Accreditation to issue Plant Health Certificates for interstate movement of budding material and plants was granted by the Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment in February 2006 and is current.
